What To Do If You Had a Fire

In the event that your home or business suffers fire damage or smoke damage there are a few things that are important to consider before the Seitz Bros. emergency crew arrives and after you have reported the incident to your insurance company:

  • Call Seitz Bros. immediately. We will send a crew out to board-up any external damages the fire may have caused to your home or business. If a board-up is not needed we will set up our air scrubbers that will help eliminate the smoke smell. Seitz Bros. Fire Restoration Division has emergency services available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year. Emergency contact: 1-888-467-1008. Call your insurance agent immediately to determine the extent of your coverage.

  • Do not go back into your home or business if the fire is still burning; you must wait until your fire department has verified that the fire is completely out and entrance to the home or business is safe.

  • Soot and burned surfaces are carcinogenic, be sure to always wear rubber gloves and respirators if you wish to remove fire or smoke damaged items from your home or business before emergency personnel arrive.

  • In the event that you have lost power for an extended period of time for any type of damage, empty your refrigerator and freezer and keep the doors open. If items have to be thrown away, which should be done if there was a fire, especially with heavy smoke, make an inventory list of each item. Be sure to include, name brands, sizes, and quantity.

  • If you have a smaller fire, do not attempt to clean walls or ceilings with plain water. We use a special chemical that will help clean and remove the smoke from the surface. Also close doors to rooms that have not been affected by the fire or smoke to help avert the smoke smell from entering other rooms.

  • Do not turn on any electronic equipment until they have been cleaned by a professional restoration service, the fire or smoke may have caused internal damage that may not be seen from the external surface.

  • If you had pets in the home during the fire, make sure they are now in a clean environment and contact your veterinarian for further advise, they may want to check your animal for any type of lung or burn damage.
